Morton’s Lead Custodian a Kids’ Champion

Morton’s Lead Custodian a Kids’ Champion

Fayette County Public Schools has chosen Markiara Smith, the lead custodian at Morton Middle School, as the Kids’ Champion for December 2025. Each month, our district recognizes an outstanding member of Team FCPS who makes a real difference in students’ lives. Smith displays exceptional dedication to her students and embodies these key champion characteristics: innovation, advocacy, empathy, knowledge, and a positive attitude.

From the colleague who nominated Smith:

“Ms. Smith goes above and beyond the role of custodian by fully integrating herself into our school community. She is incredibly supportive of students and works hard to build relationships and incentivize students for excellent academic achievement and behavior. I have seen her show up to Sister’s Keeper meetings, practices/games, and other school events. She buys treats for students who achieve great things in the classroom and works during lunch and transitions to support excellent student behavior. She daily demonstrates hard work and kindness and is a role model to our students by arriving early, completing her job with excellence, connecting with others, and being proud to be a Morton Mustang. Our students love her and see themselves in her, and that makes her one of the most essential parts of our staff. Our students respect her and are grateful for the role she plays in their daily lives. And on top of all that -- she keeps our building sparkling, helps to train other custodians, is quick to help a teacher out, and balances it all effortlessly. My work in the classroom could not be done without her!”

Superintendent Demetrus Liggins surprised Smith this week at Morton with the Kids’ Champion Award, sponsored by Forcht Bank. The Fayette County Board of Education will also salute her  at their Dec. 18 action meeting.

If you know a Kids’ Champion who advocates for students and fosters a positive environment where all can thrive, you can recommend them for this districtwide recognition!
